Prep for House Sitter

Please follow and like us:

Usually when we move onto the boat for the summer, we simply let our home empty, but this summer, when we move on, we will be living aboard for over a year! Starting in JUNE, we plan to live aboard Island Spirit for 12-15 months as we sail up to Maine then down to the Bahamas and maybe back up to Maine! We will be living the CRUISING DREAM that we have planned for many years.

We learned about house sitting from one of our best friends who has a brother that provides this service. His current house sitting position was ending and it fit into our timing, so we decided to offer the opportunity of house sitting our home for the next 12 months. House sitters do not pay rent, they simply move in with minimal items and they “pay their own expenses” and in return they look out for your home and property. Honestly, it would have been far easier to shut down the house than to move someone in, but this does seem like a win/win situation. We are excited to see how this works out.

So in prep for this, you tend to look at your home in a new light, and you work on projects that need completed, for example…

Maintain the landscaping, deck finish, and mulch beds…done!

Install a new dimensional roof ….DONE…

Empty a bedroom, closet, paint and re-paint…..DONE

Re-build a utility staircase and railings in the garage….DONE
Paint staircase in the garage down into the basement woodshop…DONE

PS:
I do know how to make staircases….here is the OAK one I built with a walnut inlay in the house…!

So….as you can see, the prep for a house sitter is progressing, and we have a few more projects on the list. Overall, this is really exciting to think about moving out of your home for 12-15 months and to go off cruising….WHAT A DREAM, and sometimes it does not seem real.

I have added a SPOT Satellite transmitter and I have been
experimenting with the process. The goal is to create Google Maps and
Pin locations of our sailing adventures. Being new to this technology,
I have made a SPOT page above where our most current map will be
embedded. I also have learned that these GPS coordinates will be
deleted after 30 days, so that is very disappointing and I will have
to log in at SPOT and download the coordinates for my own records. I
have much to learn about SPOT and I will be exploring this as we
sailing the Islands over the next week aboard LA40.

A second technology I am exploring is Google Blogging via email. This
blog post was sent into the site via an email. The goal here is to be able
to send in updates when we can only send text emails and when we have
no access to the Internet. We will be sailing across the Atlantic in
June 2011 and with SSB, we will be able to send text emails. So, this
is a test of that system.

We also have learned that if you attach a picture to the email, then it will be posted into the blog. So
this email has a small picture attached (320 pixels wide, 18K) in the hopes that it too will
appear on the blog. If this works, then we should be able to send blog
updates from the middle of the Atlantic along with a small picture.

Dreams Begin, RETIREMENT starts!

Please follow and like us:

After many years of planning, we have reached our goal of EARLY RETIREMENT! Our cruising dreams will begin this 2011 season with many exciting sailing adventures planned. For starters we will enjoy springtime on the Chesapeake Bay where we will NOT have to rush home on that dreaded Sunday afternoon. We plan to enjoy the Bay in April and May and then our biggest adventure will happen in JUNE 2011.

We have signed on as crew to cross the Atlantic, sailing from Bermuda to Azores to Falmouth England. We will be sailing on “Larking About” an Island Packet 40 with the owners, John and Nancy. We are very excited to take on this adventure. After crossing the Atlantic, we plan to return to the Bay. We will then resume our first year of cruising, making the standard ICW (Intracoastal Waterway) run south to Florida and into the Bahamas for the winter. In the spring we will make the northbound run up the ICW like we did in 2008, enjoying the many wonderful towns along the way.

We are motivated by the Mark Twain quote used so many times in the boating world, but still worth reviewing…

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

End of Season 2010

2010 was a very relaxing season #10 aboard Island Spirit with only 500 miles traveled. We decided to stay on the Chesapeake Bay all summer, and not sail up to New England like we have for the past 7 summers.

This allowed us to enjoy our local marina and also gave us time to re-discover the bay and the beauty of the Chesapeake waters. We are looking forward to next year, 2011 as we will return to New England and also enjoy some very adventurous ocean sailing!

Our Fleet

The FLEET is LAUNCHED! Since we are staying in our home port this summer and not sailing off to New England or Maine, we decided to launch out “Chesapeake 22” power boat and dock it next to Island Spirit! This will provide endless hours of tubing, harbor cruises, IP yacht photography and maybe even some Stripe Bass Fishing. We bought this boat back in 1999 when the stock market was on a tear, and we made a few quick trades and sure enough, we landed this boat. She has been under a shrink wrap for the past two summers, but this spring, we hired Mr. Miller, of Miller Marine Services to bust her out, service her and get her back in the water for 2010. She is running better than ever, she has a 115 HP Mariner Outboard on an extended arm called a strong arm which makes here seem longer. She cruises easily at 32 Knots and will pull a two man tube as well. We can be in Baltimore or Annapolis faster than by car, but mainly we just play locally. So if you are in the area, sailing by we will come out and take some high quality digital photographs of your Island Packet Yacht. Give us a call or an email….Maybe you will make our Island Packet Sailing Calendar!

Here are some photos of “our Fleet”

We have the END SLIPS, so it’s a great place to play

This is Chessie
It is a “Chesapeake 22”, it is our Photo Platform and “fun” boat.

Radeen loves taking Chessie out for a sunset cruise
Next….we launch the TUBE….as soon as Mark & Tanner Man from AZ get here!

Season #10 begins!

Please follow and like us:

It is about time we get this blog back up and running after a long cold winter with 3 blizzards! Now, after 2 months of prep work we are finally launched and in the slip. This year we replaced the entire sewer system with new hoses, new holding tank, and a new PHII head. We also decided to try another “science” project with the bottom paint. Since we use Pettit Trinidad hard bottom paint, we decided to see if it really will NOT work if we do not repaint. The company says it will not work if in the yard over the winter! OK, prove it. So, we painted only one foot down from the waterline on both sides and then as a control side, we sanded the rest of the bottom. But, we only sanded one side leaving the other side untouched. My idea is that the copper is still there and sanding will expose new anti-fouling. The untouched side will be our control side, so we will have all options covered for this study. We only used one quart this year! Worst case, we hire a diver to clean it. We will see.

This year, we plan to stay on the Chesapeake Bay all summer and rediscover the beauty of the home waters. Next year we will return to our favorite area, New England and Maine! Here are some photos of our work.

Radeen always helps with everything!

Of course she gets Flowers & Chocolates for Easter….while she paints!
Our “Science” project, painting 1 foot, and going with old

Maine 2009 Legs and Distances

Please follow and like us:

Provided here is a summary of all the individual legs we ran on our summer sail 2009 from Rock Hall, MD to Mt. Desert Maine and back. We were gone for 58 days, had a dock for 2 days at the end of the trip in Cape May NJ, but all the other days were on mooring balls or on anchor. The goal this year was to travel via NYC and Long Island Sound anchoring every night and avoiding the overnight passages. Coming home we made the usual ocean run from Block Island, RI to Cape May, NJ, for a 30 hr passage of 203 miles. Other than that, we make simple day hops from harbor to harbor all the way to Maine and Back. The hardest aspect of any trip is….”Leaving the Dock!” Once out there, “If it’s gonna happen, it’s gonna happen out there” so that’s when you deal with it….

Maine 2009 Trip Ends

Please follow and like us:

It has been the best summer sailing trip ever, with 1,636 miles covered to Acadia Maine and back. The trans output coupler nut held together all the way from Boothbay Maine to Rock Hall, MD. Traveling with buddy boats was fun, and added a new dimension to the cruise. We sincerely enjoyed traveling with a fleet of Island Packet friends as this add so much more to the adventures. We would do this again and we really enjoyed this “fleet” aspect of this summer.

We will edit and update this blog with more MAINE photos and more charts as we wind down this summer 2009. For now, it is time to clean up the boat, and return to home, and return to our teaching positions as we prepare for our 30th and 31th year of teaching!

Thank you for following our summer sail to Maine 2009….
